The History of Clark's Precision Machine and Tool:B.J. Clark began his career in manufacturing as a machinist in the U.S. Navy. That career progressed at Howell Instruments where he expanded his expertise in manufacturing, fabrication, and management. In 1968 Mr. Clark started repairing guns as a hobby in a small building in the back yard of his residence. His talent was in such demand, it soon became necessary for him to leave his management position in the manufacturing/machining business and open a gun repair business. In 1968 Mr. Clark organized and founded Clark's Gun and Ammo, a retail gun store and repair shop in a building on Hwy. 199, commonly know as Jacksboro Hwy, between Ft. Worth and Azle Texas. On June 15, 1971, Clark's Guns and Ammo, was incorporated by the State of Texas, with an employment of three people. Because of his vast experience, since his release from the U.S. Navy, in manufacturing/machining, and management, B.J. Clark made a decision to re-enter manufacturing. He began doing business as Clark's Precision Machine and Tool (CPMT). B.J. Clark pursued resources in order to expand. As the business grew, the repair and machine work became the focus and expansion concentrated on additional equipment for precision machine work. The business has continued to grow and Clark's Precision Machine and Tool now encompasses over 50,000 sq. ft., located on about 3.5 acres. This includes a full production machine shop, sheet metal shop, assembly area, welding area, saw shop, upholstery shop, and a separate paint building with current employment of approximately 40 people. The business was able to grow and survive during difficult economic times because of the commitment to excellence, customer satisfaction and the recognition that it was (and is) imperative to take advantage of technological advances such as automated equipment, laser technology, and computer systems. Edward H. Searcy, a director and Secretary/Treasurer of CPMT graduated from Rice University with two degrees in Mechanical Engineering. He spent 31 years with IBM in technical, marketing, consulting, and management areas. His association with CPMT began in 1971, where he participated in its incorporation. After retiring from IBM, Searcy formed his own consulting firm, SeaRay Associates. He is not active in daily operation at CPMT. B.J.'s wife Betty is involved on a daily basis in the operation of the business managing the accounts payable department. Gary Clark, B.J. and Betty's son, 41, is also involved in the day to day operations and has worked in the family business his entire adult life. Additionally, their daughter, Ann Clark-Hengstler, 45, assists in the bookkeeping and personnel area of the business. The Clark family has worked hard in keeping Clark's Precision Machine and Tool a close-knit family business. |
